How an electric vehicle can help you meet your goals in 2022

(BPT) - Do you want to be more budget-conscious? Perhaps you’re looking for new ways to eliminate emissions from your car’s tailpipe? Goals related to finances and the environment are popular resolutions for Americans year after year. While there are many ways to accomplish these two goals separately, switching to an electric vehicle (EV) might be a simple way to help you accomplish both.

An electric vehicle can help save you money through lower maintenance and fueling costs while reducing your amount of tailpipe emissions. Here’s more about how driving electric can get you closer to keeping these two important resolutions:

EVs save money

EVs typically mean lower maintenance and fuel costs. According to Energy.gov, light-duty battery electric vehicles are generally cheaper to maintain than traditional gas-powered vehicles. Plus, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates EV drivers can save up to $10,500 in fuel costs over a 15-year time span compared to a gas vehicle.

Electric cars also help you save through a more efficient drivetrain. EV batteries can last for 12-15 years in moderate climates, and an electric car’s drive system doesn’t lose as much energy as a traditional gas car’s engine. This means an EV can save you more money, long term.

When you factor in the improved energy efficiency and reduced maintenance costs (such as a lack of oil changes), driving electric can save you thousands during the life of the vehicle (average vehicle lifespan is 12 years). According to Consumer Reports, those savings may range between $6,000-$10,000.

If you’re looking to purchase an EV, you might be able to save even more through federal tax credits of up to $7,500. Some state and local governments may offer additional incentives too.

EVs support a sustainable lifestyle

If you’re looking for simple ways to live a less carbon-intensive lifestyle, driving an EV is a great choice as they typically emit lower levels of greenhouse gases than the average new gasoline car.

Just how much fewer emissions do EVs generate? According to the U.S. Department of Energy, EVs produce an average of 3,700 pounds of CO2 equivalent emissions per year, compared to more than 11,400 pounds of average CO2 equivalent emissions from gasoline-powered vehicles. That’s a lot of CO2 that won’t end up in the air if you’re driving electric.

EVs come with benefit of flexible charging

Once you make the decision to switch to an EV, you’ll have the benefit of flexible charging options to keep your car up and running.

According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, more than 80% of EV charging is done at home, and residential charging equipment can most likely be installed in your garage. Beyond the home, public EV charging station options are also growing rapidly, with strong support from policymakers, businesses and consumers.

Electrify America, the nation’s largest public network of ultra-fast EV charging stations, offers charging options along highway routes and in metro areas, and in many places you visit regularly: alongside restaurants, by grocery stores, at major retailers and shopping malls, close to convenience stores and gas stations — even near financial services like banks.

To help drivers feel confident taking their electric vehicles on longer trips, Electrify America offers multiple cross-country routes and several north-to-south routes, and many other interstate options along the coasts and Middle America. And the station growth continues: by 2026, the company plans to have more than 1,800 fast-charging stations and 10,000 individual chargers installed in the U.S. and Canada.

Whether you’re looking to save money or eliminate your tailpipe emissions — or both — in the next year, an EV is a great option for sticking to those resolutions. As more EVs come to market — and support for electric cars and the stations that charge them continues to grow — you can feel good knowing you’re ahead of the curve by making the switch to electric now.

How to transform your garage into a multi-purpose powerhouse

(BPT) - A garage is no longer just a place to park your car. Today's garages are agile and multifunctional, extending living space and elevating a homeowner's lifestyle.

The desire to use the garage for new purposes is a top trend with homeowners nationwide. During the pandemic, 78% of homeowners across generations intend to make changes to their garage, according to the New American Home Study. Furthermore, 49% of millennial homeowners have already transformed their garage into a gym, home office or for additional storage space.

Are you ready to transform your garage into a multifunctional powerhouse? Here are three tips for upgrading your garage and helping you design a space ideal for your needs while enhancing your home's value:

Add storage

One of the primary things that separates a stereotypical garage from an enviable one is the organization. Clutter on top of clutter inhibits the multifunctional potential of the space. To start, get rid of junk, sort through necessities and transform the space to optimize organization.

That means installing shelving and utilizing vertical space. Enclosed cabinets are ideal for limiting dust and keeping personal items out of sightlines from the road. Label and use storage boxes as needed to stay organized, especially with seasonal supplies only needed at certain times of year. Toolboxes and pegboards are ideal for keeping tools and hobby supplies conveniently on hand. Creating a system with these elements may take time, but it's worthwhile because the benefits are lasting.

Upgrade your garage door opener

It's time to ditch the loud, dated garage door opener for a stylish modern option with technology enhancements. Turn your garage into the envy of the neighborhood with the new LiftMaster Secure View garage door opener that looks like a sleek smart home device and does more than just open and close your garage door. This new opener comes with a built-in camera, corner-to-corner LED lighting and it works with the with the myQ® app so you can control, secure and monitor your garage door from anywhere. The built-in camera enables live video streaming and 2-way communication so you can see when the kids get home from school or tell your neighbor where to find the ladder.

Additionally, the powerful myQ app acts as command central, allowing homeowners to easily share and manage home access without interrupting their day, as well as enabling smart access experiences like Amazon Key In-Garage Delivery as well as Smart Vehicle Access capabilities within select vehicles. Visit Liftmaster.com for additional information.

Make it a multifunctional space

Multifunction is the key for the ultimate garage, and no matter what your interests, you can customize the space to fit your needs. A workbench is a must-have for many, with ample space to tinker and make. For gearheads, a car lift might be a worthy investment. For those focused on health, installing workout equipment makes sense. Adding a TV might be a given, whether it's to stream workouts or to watch the game.

Keep in mind, you should add extras to enhance your comfort so you can get the most out of your time in the garage. Proper task lighting is essential. Depending where you live, adding fans to cool and heating elements to warm helps make the garage a year-round retreat. Finally, upgrading flooring turns any garage into an eye-catching hot spot, so research options including epoxy coatings and garage floor tiles.

7 indoor air quality myths debunked

"Bigdoggpinc" - I am your Eyeball Acquisition Specialist. Success in life, in anything, depends upon the number of persons that one can make himself agreeable to. #mindfulness #goingaboveandbeyond #bigdoggpinc

7 indoor air quality myths debunked

(BPT) - Air quality has become a hot topic. COVID-19 heightened our awareness of all of our surroundings — especially the air we breathe. Because people spend 90% of their time indoors, especially during colder winter months, sorting fact from fiction about indoor air quality is crucial.

Trane Technologies, a global climate innovator, is helping debunk common myths about indoor air quality and offering tips to improve the air you breathe:

Myth 1: Outside air is always better.

Debunked: Not always. It’s healthy to get a dose of fresh air, but sometimes when you bring in outdoor air you can invite allergens, smog and humidity into your home. It can be better to filter your air to freshen and reduce particulates. According to Jason Bingham, president of Trane Technologies’ Residential HVAC business, “An important aspect of helping people feel confident indoors is mitigating airborne health risks, especially those related to viruses, bacteria, pet dander and other particles.”

Myth 2: Using technology to monitor indoor air quality will increase energy consumption.

Debunked: Not necessarily. Efficient and connected building technologies make it easier for experts to help builders install eco-friendly, economical heating and cooling solutions. Meanwhile, homeowners and building owners can use air quality monitors, which can detect certain potentially harmful gases and particulates, to make cost-effective, efficient decisions about improving air quality.

Myth 3: Once the pandemic is over, indoor air quality won’t be a concern.

Debunked: Indoor air quality will always be important. Without adequate ventilation, harmful gases or particles can infiltrate the air. By reducing these irritants and pollutants, you can also reduce exposure to pathogens and conditions that can cause illnesses, respiratory problems and other health risks. Plus, less illness means less absenteeism from work or school. Improved air quality in homes and buildings can pay dividends for years.

Myth 4: Vaccinated people don’t need to worry about the air quality.

Debunked: Vaccination is a protection against specific viruses, but not all. Without proper ventilation, filtration and humidity control, there is a higher risk of contaminants circulating indoors and conditions that can encourage exposure to airborne viruses. Gases, particulate matter and other pollutants can also affect your health, especially if you have asthma or allergies.

Myth 5: You can’t see air quality so you can’t feel confident about the air you breathe.

Debunked: Sophisticated sensors and technologies are available that help you know and control air quality. According to Jason Bingham, “The first step is awareness and knowing the air quality within a home or building. Once you understand your air quality and the various factors that impact it, such as ventilation and humidity, you can improve it.”

An air quality sensor can monitor for dust and allergens. A filtration system can remove 99.98% of those allergens. And a humidifier can maintain the right balance of moisture.

Myth 6: If room temperature is right, I should be OK and feel comfortable.

Debunked: Humidity plays a big part in air quality and comfort: too high or too low can cause health problems, discomfort, mildew and unhygienic air. Indoor spaces that are the right temperature but don’t have adequate ventilation can contain high concentrations of carbon dioxide, which can lead to drowsiness and headaches.

Myth 7: Thermal comfort (how we feel) has nothing to do with air quality.

Debunked: Thermal comfort is based on temperature and humidity, and humidity plays a significant role in air quality. For example, airborne transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is found to be more transmissible in dry air. As a result, researchers recommend relative humidity of 40% to 60%.

Busting these myths is just the tip of the air quality iceberg. Look to Trane Technologies to get to the bottom of indoor air quality solutions and how air quality affects you. You can also tune in to the Healthy Spaces podcast and learn more about real solutions to transform indoor spaces into healthier and safer environments.

Sweet and savory ways to indulge during the holidays without sabotaging your wellness goals

(BPT) - One of the greatest pleasures of the holidays is enjoying traditional flavors of the season. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to indulge without discarding all your wellness goals. You can enjoy festive foods if you plan ahead for holiday events, and make dishes that aren’t loaded with carbs and sugar — but still satisfy your cravings.

“It’s easy to throw your wellness goals out the window during the season, thinking you can make up for it later,” said Colette Heimowitz, vice president, Nutrition & Education, Simply Good Foods. “But with a few smart choices, you can celebrate the season without jeopardizing your nutrition goals.”

Here are some tips — and recipes — to help you indulge more thoughtfully this year.

Prep for healthier holiday gatherings

When you know you'll be celebrating at an event chock full of carbs and sweets, plan ahead.

  • Keep your energy up while prepping for holiday get-togethers by enjoying an Atkins Vanilla Latte Iced Coffee Protein Shake, with 15 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar and as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.
  • Don't arrive at a party famished so you’re less tempted to overindulge. Eat a small low-carbohydrate meal beforehand, like salmon and salad with olive oil dressing or veggies and guacamole, to stabilize your appetite and blood sugar level.
  • Don’t linger near the food table. But if you are planning to partake in the buffet, opt for protein, veggies, dips, nuts and cheese.
  • Drink plenty of water. Thirst is often mistaken for hunger, so staying hydrated helps you avoid overeating. Flavor up your water with lemon, lime or cucumber slices.

Look for keto-friendly recipes to grace your holiday table

Try these tasty, low-carb recipes developed by an Atkins nutritionist to share at holiday gatherings — or just enjoy between festivities.

Keto Cranberry Shortbread Cookies

These delectable cookies blend the tangy sweetness of cranberries, a hint of almond and an orange zest icing — and may become your new holiday favorite.

Prep time: 260 minutes (20 minutes prep; 4 hours in refrigerator); Cook time: 12 minutes

Ingredients

1/3 cup cranberries (fresh or frozen)
2 tablespoons water, divided
2 tablespoons Truvia Sweet Complete
6 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature)
1/3 cup Truvia (erythritol-stevia blend)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup blanched almond flour
1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum
1/4 cup confectioners erythritol
1/2 tablespoon orange zest

Instructions

1. In small saucepan over medium heat, bring cranberries, 1 tablespoon water and 2 tablespoons Truvia to a simmer. Cook until cranberries pop — about 10 minutes from fresh or 15 minutes from frozen. Set aside to cool.
2. In bowl of stand mixer, cream together room temperature butter and 1/3 cup Truvia until lightened and fluffy. Add vanilla extract, almond extract and cranberries, mixing until well combined.
Add sifted almond flour and xanthan, mixing on low until just combined.
Create 6-inch-long log of dough on sheet of parchment paper or plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator at least 4 hours, until very solid. Cookies will spread significantly if not chilled adequately.
3. Heat oven to 350 F and prepare baking sheet with parchment paper. Cut cold dough into 12, 1/2-inch thick rounds and place on baking sheet, cut side down.
Bake 11-13 minutes until bottom edges are golden brown. Watch closely the last few minutes to ensure cookies don’t burn.
Cool on baking sheet 5 minutes, then gently place on cooling rack and cool completely, about 30 minutes. These cookies will be very crumbly until completely cooled.
4. While cookies cool, in small bowl, use fork to combine confectioners erythritol and water to form paste. Dip (or drizzle) cooled cookies in icing, applying about 4 grams icing per cookie. Sprinkle icing with orange zest and allow icing to set.
Store in airtight container at room temperature up to 5 days, or in freezer up to 3 months.
Makes 12 servings. One iced cookie is one serving.

Low-Carb Warm Brussels Sprouts Salad with Hazelnuts

This quick and easy salad takes 15 minutes to make. It combines fresh, thinly shaved Brussels sprouts with a flavorful dressing of olive oil, shallots and thyme — plus sugar-free maple syrup for a hint of sweetness. Roasted hazelnuts and pomegranate arils on top add more taste and texture while giving the salad a colorful, festive holiday look. See the full recipe at Atkins.com/recipes.

The silent health risk of COVID-19: Five facts to know about blood clots

The silent health risk of COVID-19: Five facts to know about blood clots

(BPT) - COVID-19 is associated with many complications, but one that many people are not as aware of are blood clots. According to a recent study, between 25% to 49% of patients with severe COVID-19 also experience blood clots with blood clots in the lungs being the most common condition. These blood clots can be limb- and life-threatening.

Jeremy Sipe, a 52-year-old avid runner, knew something was wrong when he was experiencing shortness of breath after a few steps on the treadmill. He tried again later in the day and the same thing happened — he was out of breath after just a couple of seconds. He called his doctor immediately and ended up in the hospital diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung, also known as a pulmonary embolism.

“Jeremy’s clot could have been life threatening,” said Dr. George Chrysant, interventional cardiologist at INTEGRIS Baptist in Oklahoma City, OK. “It is important to recognize the signs of blood clots, especially pulmonary embolisms, because when they are diagnosed and treated quickly, complications decrease dramatically.”

Blood clots are often overlooked and misunderstood. The following are a few things to know about blood clots.

Risk factors for blood clots

Blood clots can affect anyone at any age, but there are factors that can increase risk, like surgery, hospitalization, pregnancy, cancer, and family history. Studies have shown an increased chance of suffering a blood clot during the COVID-19 pandemic, both among those who have the virus and those with more sedentary lifestyles due to shutdowns and working from home.

Symptoms of blood clots

A blood clot in your arm or leg can cause swelling and pain. It may be tender, red, or warm to the touch. A blood clot in the lung can cause difficulty breathing, an irregular heartbeat, chest pain and coughing up blood, according to the American Lung Association.

Technology for blood clots

Dr. Chrysant removed Jeremy’s blood clot with a medical technology from Penumbra, Inc. called the Indigo System Lightning 12. It works like a minimally invasive “vacuum” inside a blocked artery or vein to remove a blood clot.

“In the past, we would have been limited to clot-dissolving medications, which can be problematic because they sometimes require long stays in the intensive care unit and have a high risk of causing bleeding elsewhere in the body,” Dr. Chrysant said.

Five facts to know about blood clots

Doctors say it’s important to know the facts and seek treatment right away if you suspect a blood clot. Here are a few things to remember:

  1. Blood clots can affect anyone. Still, there are risk factors that include smoking, obesity, pregnancy, being sedentary, and birth control and hormone therapy. Certain diseases and conditions, such as cancer, also increase risk.
  2. Genetics play a role. If you have family members who have a history of blood clots, or you have a personal history of repeated blood clots, you could be more at risk.
  3. Doctors have tools to diagnose a blood clot, but there is no routine screening. Your doctor will gather information about your medical history, age, medications, and lifestyle factors. Diagnostic tests are usually only performed if a clot is suspected.
  4. There have been recent advancements in the treatment of blood clots. With new technology, doctors have more treatment options to help patients.
  5. You can help prevent blood clots. Be aware of risk factors, recognize the signs and symptoms and see your doctor right away if you suspect a blood clot. And remember, when you’ve been sitting for a long time, stand up and walk around or stretch your legs every couple of hours.

“I’m fortunate that I saw my doctor right away and had this blood clot taken care of that same day,” said Sipe. “I felt a difference immediately after the procedure and I even went to the gym that evening. It’s important to know when to see a doctor, especially when things don’t seem right.”

5 things you may not know about the power of plasma

5 things you may not know about the power of plasma

(BPT) - You’ve heard all the stories about the importance of donating blood, but you might not be as familiar with the other lifesaving substance flowing through your veins — plasma. While the world is focused on the important issue of a blood donor shortage, there’s an equally critical need for plasma donors as a result of the pandemic. The shortage of plasma could impact many people who rely on these lifesaving plasma-based therapies. Your help makes the difference in someone’s life by donating plasma.

Below are 5 frequently asked questions about plasma.

1) What is plasma? Plasma is the fluid component of human blood. It supports essential bodily functions, including red blood cells, white blood cells, clotting factors and other components to fight deadly diseases. Plasma is also used to treat patients with serious diseases and conditions, like burn injury survivors, people with hemophilia, people with rare diseases and people with certain types of cancer.

2) Why is it so important to donate? A lot of plasma is needed for each patient who relies on these therapies to survive. For example, it takes 1,200 plasma donations to treat 1 patient with hemophilia per year. It can take up to a whole year to make plasma-derived medicine, so a decline in plasma donations could impact patients’ ability to access their medications.

3) Do that many people really use plasma? Yes. 125,000 Americans rely on medication made from plasma. These treatments can mean the difference between life and death for patients who suffer from a variety of chronic conditions, like primary immunodeficiency diseases and hemophilia. Without regularly receiving these medicines, patients may suffer chronic fatigue, physical damage or even death.

4) Why are we talking about this now? There is a serious shortage of plasma donors in the U.S. Shutdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the plasma supply decreasing by more than 20%. The supply has been declining for more than a year, and that trend doesn’t seem to be shifting. The need has never been greater for people to donate plasma.

5) Is it easy to donate? Yes. You can donate plasma twice a week since plasma is replaced within about 24 hours, whereas red cells need between 4-6 weeks to be replaced. In less than two hours, your plasma can make a lasting impact by providing lifesaving medicine for those who need it, when they need it most.

How you can help

“The pandemic has impacted all Americans, but its lingering effects on plasma donations are frightening for those who rely on plasma-derived therapies, including the tens of thousands of immunocompromised patients,” said John Boyle, a patient and health advocate who relies on plasma-based therapeutics to live a normal life. “We haven’t seen this type of plasma shortage before, and that’s why we’re calling on everyday heroes to step up and donate plasma now to help save lives.”

Plasma donation centers are available throughout the country, with more than 800 centers nationwide. Donation centers are staffed with medically trained professionals to help you through the donation process. A list of centers can be accessed at: https://www.donatingplasma.org/.

Top paratriathlete encourages everyone to take care of their eyes: Here's how

Top paratriathlete encourages everyone to take care of their eyes: Here's how

(BPT) - As one of the world’s top paratriathletes, Amy Dixon is always looking forward. Even though an autoimmune disorder has taken away most of her ability to see, she has extraordinary vision for reaching her goals.

This summer, she competes in Tokyo. For Dixon, it’s an incredible journey that would have seemed unimaginable two decades earlier.

Vision troubles come to light

Dixon first noticed her vision problems as a 22-year-old college student. She struggled to see clearly in a darkened room. Driving at night, she failed to notice oncoming cars. The signs were clear that something was wrong with her eye health, but she wasn’t convinced.

“I had 20/20 vision as a kid, so I dismissed the problems I was having as being related to some other condition like migraine,” said Dixon, a migraine sufferer since she was a teen. “I was ignoring what was obvious — that something was wrong with my eyes.”

After scheduling an appointment with an ophthalmologist, Dixon learned she had uveitis, a form of inflammation inside the eye. Her doctor told her that the disease had already put her eyesight in serious jeopardy. He said that 70% of her peripheral vision had been lost and she would need to begin treatment immediately or risk going blind within 10 years.

“Unfortunately, I waited too long before having my eyes examined and uveitis had already attacked my vision. When the diagnosis sunk in, I thought I was destined to go blind,” Dixon said.

Becoming her own advocate

Rallying behind a forward-looking attitude that would become her calling card, Dixon confronted her condition head-on. Working with her doctor, she began an aggressive treatment regimen. While uveitis would eventually take 98% of her vision, the treatments succeeded in slowing down progression of the disease.

A new diagnosis and the athlete reemerges

With her uveitis in remission, Dixon received a second vision diagnosis: She now had developed glaucoma as a result of her treatment. Resilient and determined to keep her life moving forward, Dixon began treating her glaucoma.

Along the way, she reengaged in sports and took up swimming, a favorite activity for the former competitive high school swimmer. When a friend introduced her to triathlons (swimming, running and biking), she was hooked. She completed her first triathlon in 2013 and today, she is the reigning ITU Aquathlon World Champion and a seven-time ITU Triathlon Gold Medalist. When the competition in Tokyo starts in August, Dixon will race toward the finish line the same way she approaches life: by overcoming the setbacks in her path. It’s an important lesson she is eager to share.

“There is always a way forward,” said Dixon. “I encourage people to maximize the strengths they have and find creative ways to do the things they want. It may not be the way you wish for, but if you are open to learning, you can do great things.”

A prescription for better eye health

Dixon views her journey as a cautionary tale and she encourages everyone to be proactive in taking care of their eyes.

“Uveitis progressed quickly in impacting my vision because I waited too long to see a doctor and wasn’t diligent about getting my eyes examined annually,” Dixon said. “Pay attention to your eyes. If you suspect you have a vision problem, then see an eye doctor right away.”

As she continues to manage her glaucoma, she also urges people, particularly young adults, to be wary of a disease that can sneak up without symptoms and is the leading cause of irreversible blindness.

“A dilated eye exam could save your sight,” Dixon said. “The power is in your hands, so be your own advocate for achieving better eye health.”

If you’ve been diagnosed with glaucoma or are caring for someone with glaucoma, a resource is “Understanding and Living with Glaucoma.” This free booklet is published by the Glaucoma Research Foundation, with support from Aerie Pharmaceuticals. It can be downloaded or ordered (in English and Spanish) at www.glaucoma.org/booklet.

(BPT) - The COVID-19 pandemic has had more impact on the world than could have been imagined. One unexpected impact is the long-term symptoms some people experience for weeks or months after recovering from the disease, a syndrome called long COVID. Researchers estimate 10% to 30% of people who contract COVID-19 develop long COVID after recovering from the disease, with more women reporting lasting symptoms, according to JAMANetwork.com.

Those suffering from long COVID experience ongoing combinations of symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, body aches, coughing, joint pain, chest pain, intermittent fever, difficulty concentrating, headaches and even continued loss of taste and smell. Others also report the mental impacts of prolonged symptoms, which include depression, anxiety, changes to their mood and sleep, and a mental “brain fog” that won’t lift. In all, people suffering with long COVID can have up to 200 symptoms.

Dr. Archelle Georgiou, an author and expert in consumer healthcare, said that minimizing symptoms and the people who are experiencing long COVID is another unfortunate stage in this pandemic. Understanding that long COVID is a real syndrome, should be treated by experts, and is not imagined may be a relief for some who are suffering with the ongoing effects of the virus.

While the number of infected people who will develop long-lasting symptoms is unclear, what is true is those with long COVID can be old, young, healthy or those with chronic conditions. Although many experiencing prolonged symptoms of COVID-19 do not require hospitalization, the ongoing symptoms still have a major impact on their daily lives, livelihood and, of course, health. A recent COVID Symptom Study of more than 3,700 people with long COVID in 56 countries found that more than half were not able to work full time because of their ongoing symptoms. With symptoms varying from day to day, individuals can feel isolated — alone on an unpredictable journey.

The pandemic has revealed how truly important connecting and seeking social support from your family and friends is as you go through challenging times. Suffering from ongoing symptoms of COVID-19, like any other health journey, can be difficult to endure alone. Access to information and support is a critical factor in the path to healing for those experiencing long COVID-19. There are many resources to read online, however having support from others and a sense of community are also very important. Among the places that provide resources, CaringBridge understands the importance of helping people connect with family and friends during personal health journeys and has developed a new Long COVID Support Center, to keep people up to date with the latest medical research studies, links to support groups, information on finding and accessing post COVID care centers, and advice and opportunities to connect with other users experiencing ongoing COVID-19 symptoms.

Connecting with other long COVID patients in a virtual community is an important way to stay abreast of new health information and a way to get emotional support as you navigate your health journey. Finding social support and connection is important considering those who are experiencing long COVID or long-lasting symptoms are reporting a rise in sense of isolation, according to a 2020 study.

“Research has shown listening to other people’s stories can improve both mental and physical health. Sharing your story is empowering and liberating and helps not only yourself but others through creating empathic connections and supportive audiences,” said Georgiou.

In the presence of the unknown of long COVID, love and support can be a lifeline. According to a study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, social support is by far the most important factor for population health outcomes, with 40% of population health outcomes being determined by social support. The power of meaningful connections is real, and the support of a community is crucial as long COVID patients continue through their health journey.

Surprising ways you might be attracting mosquitoes

"Bigdoggpinc" - I am your Eyeball Acquisition Specialist. Success in life, in anything, depends upon the number of persons that one can make himself agreeable to. #mindfulness #goingaboveandbeyond #bigdoggpinc

(BPT) - These days you’re probably enjoying your outdoor spaces more than ever — and looking for ways to make them more comfortable, relaxing and fun for your family and friends when you get together. On top of upgrading your deck or patio, sprucing up your landscaping, and investing in some new outdoor furniture, you’re also probably trying to reduce some of the common pain points that plague outdoor spaces — like too much sun, and too many pests.

A recent survey of 2,000 American homeowners found that 41% of them made more investments in outdoor pest control during the pandemic, and 69% planned to make even more use of their outdoor spaces as the weather continues to warm up. The survey, conducted by TruGreen in partnership with OnePoll, found that 42% of respondents anticipated that mosquitoes would be their biggest pest this year.

While nobody enjoys having mosquitoes hanging around their outdoor barbeque or picnic, did you know there are things you’re doing that attract mosquitoes?

Here’s how you may be inviting mosquitoes to your outdoor party, and what you can do about it:

  • Drinking beer and wine. Mosquitoes are attracted to high levels of carbon dioxide, elevated temperatures, and lactic acid — which all increase in your body when you drink alcohol, especially fermented beverages like beer and wine.
  • Serving sugary foods and drinks. Mosquitoes need sugar to survive, and while they prefer to get their sugar fix from natural sources like plant nectar, the scent of sugary foods like baked treats and sugary sodas will also attract them.
  • Wearing dark clothing. Dark-colored clothing retains heat more than light-colored clothing does, so choosing lighter colors will not only keep you cooler but likely less appealing to pesky mosquitoes.

What can you do to discourage mosquitoes from entering your outdoor space?

  • Bring in a professional. Partnering with a professional service like TruGreen for mosquito control can help you enjoy your outdoor living space to the fullest this summer — providing much more effective, long-lasting protection against those pesky party crashers. TruGreen uses its science-based and local expertise to control and manage potentially disease-carrying insects in your outdoor living spaces.
  • Crank up the fan. Mosquitoes aren’t the strongest flyers in the insect world, so they prefer not to fly into areas where wind or a fan is blowing around. Keeping a fan going outside, even if it’s blowing warm air around, will help keep pests away.
  • Tidy up. Maintain a lawn clear of debris such as twigs, branches, and leaves to help prevent mosquitoes from making your home into theirs. Trimming overgrown vegetation will help prevent mosquitoes from hanging out, as they tend to prefer shaded areas.

"While you can try some natural methods to help keep pests at bay, by far the best protection from mosquitoes is using a professional pest control service like TruGreen," said TruGreen entomologist John Bell. “We have the science-backed know-how to effectively control and reduce mosquito populations, guaranteeing that your outdoor living space is comfortable for your family, friends, and even your pets.”

You won't have to worry about mosquitoes invading your fun if you engage a professional service. You can fully enjoy those long summer days and evenings comfortably outdoors. Visit TruGreen.com to learn more and to find a service near you.

The perfect sips, trips and tips for a satisfying summer season

"Bigdoggpinc" - I am your Eyeball Acquisition Specialist. Success in life, in anything, depends upon the number of persons that one can make himself agreeable to. #mindfulness #goingaboveandbeyond #bigdoggpinc

(BPT) - After a year like no other, everyone is seeking ways to celebrate the summer and enjoy those little things that make such a big difference. You don’t have to be a wine expert to know that the right wine or cocktail for the occasion can make any get-together truly outstanding. Whether you’re hanging out with friends around the grill or embarking on an epic road trip, here are tips for relearning how to enjoy the moment.

1. Stemware for everywhere

Or better yet — stemless wineglasses! Find unbreakable, shatterproof, insulated wineglasses online that are just perfect for your next patio party, beach day or glamping trip. There are plenty of choices for insulated tumblers and coolers to keep wine and other beverages chilled and safe, no matter where you go.

2. Choose wines that are bright, light and just right

Whether relaxing with friends on the beach or around your backyard fire pit, enjoy a light, refreshing white wine that’s fragrant, vibrantly fruity and crisp, like the 2020 Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. The vineyards are planted along the Wairau River’s edge, creating quality wines to help you enjoy the moment.

3. Keep cool

When you’re enjoying an outdoor get-together, you’ll want to prevent wine from getting too warm — even reds. One trick is to store wine bottles in a cooler or a bucket filled with ice, salt and water. The salt in the water helps bring the freezing point of water below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

4. Inspire your inner mixologist

Did you know wines can be used to create refreshing summer drinks? Add seasonal fruit or herbs to transform a favorite wine into a cooling cocktail.

Create your own Moscato Moscow Mule with this easy recipe:

Ingredients

  • 5 ounces Seven Daughters Moscato
  • A few ounces club soda
  • Lime
  • Ginger ale

Instructions

Mix Seven Daughters Moscato and club soda.
Add squeeze of lime and top with ginger ale.
Garnish with lime wedge.
Makes 1 serving.

5. Rediscover wine country

When you’re itching to get away from it all, why not sip your way through a tasting flight at a winery? With over 11,000 wineries across the U.S., you have plenty to choose from. You can even find hidden gems in parts of well-known Napa, like the Maxville Winery in the Chiles Valley. This unique winery started as a summer camp, with its first grapevines planted back in 1974. Today, you can visit the winery and sample the Estate Maxville Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Red Blend and Petite Sirah.

6. Fire up the grill and chill

When you’re grilling outdoors, choosing a wine that complements whatever you’re barbecuing can be challenging, but when you find one that can really bring out the flavor of your food, everything tastes that much better.

Here’s an easy rule of thumb:

For traditionalists, burgers, ribs and steaks pair perfectly with a Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel or even a Malbec. For lighter fare like grilled fish, chicken, pork chops or veggies, choose a lighter wine to pair with it, like a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or a dry Rose.

5 fun ways to cool off with kids when temps soar

"Bigdoggpinc" - I am your Eyeball Acquisition Specialist. Success in life, in anything, depends upon the number of persons that one can make himself agreeable to. #mindfulness #goingaboveandbeyond #bigdoggpinc

5 fun ways to cool off with kids when temps soar

(BPT) - Heat waves can put a damper on family fun. When temperatures soar, you might not be able to do many favorite summer activities with kids. Playground equipment sizzles small hands. Sand scorches the feet. Even the hot breezes melt your ice cream faster than you can eat it. Fortunately, with a little planning, there are some awesome activities for hot weather that will help you cool off and make memories.

Visit an indoor waterpark

Whether it's playing in a wave pool, relaxing on a lazy river or feeling the thrill of the waterslides, a visit to an indoor waterpark is the perfect way to beat the summer heat. Kalahari Resorts and Conventions, home to America’s Largest Indoor Waterparks, is always 84 degrees and sunny with plenty of space to spread out and have some fun. The resorts also offer indoor theme parks, massive game rooms and fun for every member of the family. In honor of National Waterpark Day on July 28, visit www.kalahariresorts.com/celebrate to get a special offer and make some special family memories this summer.

Play ice cube activities

You can use ice to cool your drinks on hot days, but their use doesn't stop there. Set up ice cube races by adding water to a bin and have kids blow air through straws to move the cubes to the finish line. You can also put small toys in ice cubes and freeze before letting kids feel like Antarctic archeologists as they chip away the ice with spoons and other safe kitchen utensils to discover the treasures. Finally, become scientists and try to discover the fastest way to melt cubes. Will it be in your hands, in the sun, using salt or another way?

Try no-bake recipes

When the heat is high, you probably want to avoid turning on the oven or stove. Hot weather is a great reason to try new recipes that require no baking. Gather your family and search for interesting options to try and then head to the grocer to gather ingredients as you enjoy the AC in the store. When you're back at home, gather your kitchen crew and start chopping, mixing and making. One option that's great to try during the dog days of summer is homemade ice cream. Whether you opt for fruity, chocolaty or classic vanilla, it's enjoyable to make this cool treat together.

Have an indoor beach party

If it's simply too hot to leave the air-conditioned comfort of home, you can still enjoy the feeling of going to the beach. Kids can dress in swimsuits, lay out towels and play tropical music to create a water world without the splashing mess. They can also enjoy summer snacks to embrace the water vibe, such as ice-cold lemonade, freeze pops or ice cream cones. You could even play with kinetic sand and blow up pool floaties and beach balls for an extra fun time.

Explore armchair travel

Visiting a movie theater or streaming a show at home will surely help you relax and stay cool, but when you want something different, consider exploring the world from the comfort of your couch. Many museums and tourist destinations offer virtual tours so visitors can enjoy famous sights without leaving the house. From virtual visits of galleries at the Louvre in France to watching the webcams of Yellowstone National Park and so much more, there's plenty to explore online so you can learn while enjoying a staycation.

When it's hot outside, it’s a good excuse to try something new. It might turn out to be your family's favorite time together this summer as you forget about the heat and focus on the fun.

You Can Help Create a Future with Better Lyme Disease Diagnosis

"Bigdoggpinc" - I am your Eyeball Acquisition Specialist. Success in life, in anything, depends upon the number of persons that one can make himself agreeable to. #mindfulness #goingaboveandbeyond #bigdoggpinc

You Can Help Create a Future with Better Lyme Disease Diagnosis

(BPT) - With summer in full swing and COVID-19 restrictions easing up, many people are heading outdoors after over a year of being confined to their homes. Along with warmer weather comes tick season, especially if you live on the East Coast or in the upper Midwest where reports of ticks responsible for Lyme disease are more prevalent.

It is important to check for ticks after spending time in wooded areas, the grass or garden, as ticks can transmit a bacterial infection known as Lyme disease. Lyme disease, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks, is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. In fact, experts are predicting that this year may bring one of the worst tick seasons yet and are already reporting an increase in Lyme disease-related tick exposures across the country.

The Disease

A bullseye rash is one of the hallmarks of Lyme disease, identified by a circular, expanding rash with target-like appearance, which can vary in size and shape. However, up to 30% of infected people never get a rash at the site of the tick bite. Other Lyme disease symptoms (fever, headache or fatigue) can be non-specific and even overlap with symptoms of many other common diseases or illnesses, like the flu or even COVID-19.

Early Detection Matters

About 300,000 Americans are affected by Lyme disease each year, but current tests only provide accurate diagnoses for about 30% of those that are newly affected. What’s more, current tests are less likely to capture a positive Lyme case at its earliest stages, which also happens to be when the disease is easiest to treat. Delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis can increase the chances of more severe complications, like chronic joint inflammation, facial palsy, memory loss and/or irregular heart rhythm.

How You Can Get Involved

If you’ve recently developed Lyme disease, your immune system may provide information for earlier-stage detection of Lyme disease. To help advance new tests for Lyme disease, Adaptive Biotechnologies launched the ImmuneSense™ Lyme Study to better understand the body’s immune response.

You may be eligible to participate in the research study if you are exhibiting the bullseye rash. Participants have the option of completing study activities at a local clinical site or through a free mobile phlebotomy service and no-contact telehealth appointments.

Why Your Participation Matters

If left untreated, Lyme disease may become a serious illness for many people, but if caught early, it can typically be treated with antibiotics and long-term complications can be avoided. Early detection is key for treatment and now there is an opportunity to help bring about new detection methods for this serious and often overlooked disease.

Find a Study Site

The research study is being conducted at multiple sites across the country, especially in regions where ticks are more prevalent like the East Coast and upper Midwest. Visit www.immunesensestudy.com to find out how to get involved with the research study and be part of the solution for better testing for Lyme disease. The test being studied is an investigational use only product.

You can find KidsBURGH only in Pittsburgh

"Bigdoggpinc" - I am your Eyeball Acquisition Specialist. Success in life, in anything, depends upon the number of persons that one can make himself agreeable to. #mindfulness #goingaboveandbeyond #bigdoggpinc

You can find KidsBURGH only in Pittsburgh

(BPT) - As people across the country are again starting to travel and plan those long-awaited vacations, many cities are promoting themselves as the ultimate family-friendly destination. Yet, only one city can officially call itself KidsBURGH. That would be Pittsburgh.

The city — long known for its hundreds of bridges, sports teams and Primanti Bros. sandwiches — now also boasts a thriving arts and culture district, including the world renowned The Andy Warhol Museum, a growing technology reputation in part due to the engineering and robotics talent annually graduating from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, and the many Only in Pittsburgh family attractions such as the National Aviary, Carnegie Science Center, the Gateway Clipper Fleet and so much more. It is no wonder that Pittsburgh has become a major travel destination for business events, sports events and leisure visitors.

And, those leisure visitors include kids of all ages.

“We are so proud to officially say that Pittsburgh is KidsBURGH,” Tom Loftus, chief marketing officer for VisitPITTSBURGH, the city’s official tourism and promotion agency, said. “Not only does it have a nice ring to it, but our Only in Pittsburgh family attractions help differentiate us from all the other cities that also are reopening.”

VisitPITTSBURGH saw the value of the KidsBURGH brand many years ago when it sought and received a trademark, and the brand continues to be solidified with the quantity and quality of Pittsburgh’s family-fun attractions, including: Kennywood, the historic amusement park, and its sister attractions, Idlewild & SoakZone and Sandcastle; the Gateway Clipper Fleet, which makes cruising on one of the city’s famous three rivers a must-do activity; the National Aviary, the only indoor dedicated bird zoo in America; the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium; the Duquesne Incline, one of Pittsburgh’s centuries-old funiculars that shuttles riders to the top of Mount Washington, providing spectacular views of the Downtown skyline; Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens; and biking along Pittsburgh’s 24 miles of riverfront trails. Speaking of biking, an ambitious family could opt to ride the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) trail and bike from Pittsburgh all the way to Washington, D.C.

Not a bike enthusiast? That’s OK! Pittsburgh has 90 unique neighborhoods waiting for you to explore. Maybe the most famous neighborhood is the one not officially listed on the city’s map but easily identifiable by kids of all ages. Pittsburgh is, course, also Mister Rogers’ neighborhood. The city icon’s legacy is present during any visit to Pittsburgh. From the Tribute to Children statue, a bronze likeness of the television star located on the North Shore, to a special exhibit dedicated to Mister Rogers within the Senator John Heinz History Center, there are plenty of ways for families to connect with Pittsburgh’s friendliest neighbor.

“The Heinz History Center is very proud to feature the largest collection of original items from the ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ television set,” Brady Smith, the History Center’s Director of Marketing & Communications, said. “From the original entryway and living room set that Fred Rogers walked through to begin each show, to King Friday XIII’s Castle, Mr. McFeely’s ‘Speedy Delivery’ tricycle and more, old and new fans are sure to find plenty to explore at the Heinz History Center.”

An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, the Heinz History Center is only one of an impressive collection of museums in the three rivers city. Families can spend hours if not days enjoying the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Science Center and the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, the latter of which showcases one of the country’s largest collections of dinosaur bones.

“The Carnegie Museum of Natural History invites you to step back in time and walk among the dinosaurs and other ancient creatures in our Dinosaurs in Their Time exhibit,” Sloan MacRae, the museum’s Director of Marketing, said. “Whether it’s Dippy, our friendly ambassador and most famous fossil, or the world’s first T. rex fossils, visitors of all ages are enthralled by our galleries, which feature many real dinosaur skeletons and 10,000 other natural wonders.”

“We have been told that it must be easy to promote a city that has emerged as a major travel destination,” Loftus laughed. “It does help that we have so many Only in Pittsburgh attractions, including our KidsBURGH partners. But, in a market that is bursting with options, our job is to convince travelers to visit Pittsburgh. We know that once they are here, the city will sell itself.”
